چکیده

A novel sensor fusion algorithm for retrieving the freeze/thaw state from scatterometer data is presented: it is based on a probabilistic model, a variant of the Hidden Markov model, and it computes the probability that the landscape is frozen, thawed, or thawing for each day. By combining Ku and C band scatterometer data, the distinct backscattering properties of snow, soil and vegetation at the two radar bands are exploited. The parameters that are necessary for inferring the freeze/thaw state are estimated in an unsupervised fashion, i.e. no training data are required. Comparison with model and in-situ temperature data in a test area in Siberia/northern China indicate that the approach yields promising results (typical accuracies exceeding 90%); difficulties are encountered over bare rock and areas where large fluctuations in soil moisture are common. These limitations turn out to be closely linked to the inherent assumptions of the probabilistic model.

-.' I I I 1 I I1 AbstractSpaceborne scatterometry, although originally used to measure winds over oceans, has been useful in the study of vegetation over different regions of the world. For example, scatteromleter measurements of the normalized radar cross section, go have been used for tropical vegetation classification and in studies of the freeze/thaw cycles of Boreal forests. From September...

Surface State across Scales; Temporal and Spatial Patterns in Land Surface Freeze/Thaw Dynamics

Freezing and thawing of the land surface affects ecosystem and hydrological processes, the geotechnical properties of soil and slope stability. Currently, available datasets on land surface state lack either sufficient temporal or spatial resolution to adequately characterize the complexity of freeze/thaw transition period dynamics. Surface state changes can be detected using microwave remote s...

Frozen Soil Detection Based on Advanced Scatterometer Observations and Air Temperature Data as Part of Soil Moisture Retrieval

Surface soil moisture is one of the operational products derived from Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) data. The reliability of its estimation depends on the detection of predominantly frozen conditions of the landscape (including soil and vegetation) and the presence of wet snow, which would otherwise impede the estimation. As the robust determination of the freeze/thaw (F/T) state using exclusi...

Strength Characteristics of Clay Mixtures with Waste Materials in Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Waste tires, rubbers, plastic and steel materials, normally produced in every society, enter the environment and cause serious problems. These problems may, to some extent, be reduced by finding applications for them in engineering, for example, they can be used for geotechnical applications as backfill material and solving problems with low shear strength soils. Such materials may be subjected...

Backscatter Variability Observed in C-Band and Ku-Band Scatterometer Data

The backscatter from ocean waves measured by scatterometers is primarily determined by the speed and direction of near-surface wind, while other influences (temperature, salinity, swell, etc.) appear to be secondary effects. A complete theoretical geophysical model, incorporating all influences on the backscatter, appears beyond the current state of science; empirical estimates of the wind-back...
